At 08:30hrs, you will depart from Mount Meru hotel which is 4593 feet/1400 meters above sea level to Marangu gate(6233 feet/1900 m.a.s.l) which is about 119.3 km/74.13 miles from Arusha town. During this 2.5 hours drive to Marangu, there will be a 15 minute break at Boma Ng’ombe for last shopping on snacks or any needed supplies. After arriving at Marangu gate, we will do registration procedures and the potters will organize and pack for hiking. We will begin the ascent at Marangu gate from 6233 feet/1900 m.a.s.l to Mandara hut (8,858 feet/2700 m.a.sl) which is a walking distance of 8 km/4.971 miles of 6 hours. You will have lunch boxes and dinner will be at the huts. The vegetation cover is Montane forest, thus you can expect rain, mud and foggy conditions. You should also be on the look out for wildlife.
You will ascend from Mandara hut (8858/2700 m.a.s.l) to Horombo hut (12,204 feet/3720 m.a.s.l) which is a walking distance of 12 km/7.456 miles for 8 hours.
This stretch is comprised of moorland and you will spot exotic plants like the giant lobelia and groundsels. Temperatures drop below freezing at this point and especially get extremely cold at night.
You will spend the day at Horombo hut (12,204 feet/3720 m.a.s.l) to acclimatize and allow your body to get used to this high altitude by hiking to Zebra rock. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided at the hut.
You will ascend from Horombo hut to Kibo hut (15,419 feet/4700 m.a.s.l), which is a walking distance of 10km/6.214 miles for 8 hours by starting early morning after breakfast and pass through the alpine desert. Kibo hut is located in the “Saddle” which refers to the area located between the 2 peaks of Mawenzi and kibo in the alpine desert. An early dinner will be served so hikers can rest before attempting the summit on the same night. Your guide will brief you on the details on how to prepare for the summit night.
This is the grand finale, where you will move from Kibo hut (15,419 feet/4700 m.a.s.l) to Uhuru peak (19,340 feet/5,895 m.a.s.l) which is a walking distance of 6 km/3.728 miles with a hiking time of 8 hours. The vegetation is comprised of stone scree and ice capped summit. You will awake at around 23:30hrs for tea and biscuits. Then you will begin your summit attempt. The trail is rocky up to the Hans Meyer cave (16,896 feet/5,150 m.a.s.l). You will continue you ascent to Gillman’s point (18,638 feet/5,681 m.a.s.l). Gillman’s point is located on the crater rim. From this point, you expect to experience a snow covered trail until you reach the summit, Uhuru peak(19,340 feet/5,895 m.a.s.l). You will be able to spend a short time on the summit and take photograph and drink water before starting your descend back to Kibo hut which takes 3 hours. At Kibo hut, you will rest and enjoy hot lunch in the sun and after eating you will continue to descend down to Horombo hut. You will have dinner, wash and rest soundly at the hut after the strenuous day.
Following a well-deserved breakfast, you will have a party like celebration with dancing and singing. In case you had plans to tip, it best to give it hear to the potters, guides or cooks. After the celebration, you will descend for 6 hours back to Marangu gate with a walking distance of 22 km/13.67 miles. You will sign your name to receive certificates. Hikers who reached Gillman’s point will receive green certificates while gold certificates will be given to those who reached Uhuru peak.
